Jill Scott.

I've been into Jill Scott for a few years now. When I first heard her voice and lyrics I was blown away!

Born in 1972 in Philadelphia, Jill Scott grew up in the ghetto with her mom and grandmother. A deeply loved and gifted child, one of her old school teachers described her as a butterfly among flies. After running from Jill's abusive stepfather, mother and child moved in with Jill's grandmother. She attended Temple University and planned to be a teacher.

However, after finding work her fellow professors disapproved of her unique method of teaching the kids: she often incorporated singing and melody in order to help with memorization. Due to the negative comments she was receiving, she quit.

She then joined a local theatre troop and began to do poetry readings and befriended some big names included DJ Jazzy Jeff. She wrote wrote several songs in only three days during the summer of 1999. One of them, entitled
You Got Me was performed by Erykah Badu.

She made 52 songs for her debut album and had a lot of trouble trimming it down. Finally, after much deliberation,
Who is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds Vol 1. I was released in 2000. She received mad respect and the album went platinum within months.

I have been waiting for her follow-up album for over two years! It was released at the end of August and is entitled
Beautifully Human, Words & Sounds Vol 2.
